More futuristic cityscapes, but am really enjoying doing them at the moment. Stonemason's Greeble Pack used extensively again, plus Dysopia Buildings, and a few of my own. The sky is a mix of six or so different photographs and a lot of painting.

As usual, a larger view is recommended. Thanks for looking and any comments...Cheers, Ian

That is so freaking amazing. It looks like a mix of some Star Wars city and Midgar (Final Fantasy 7) :iconcloudeweplz: [link] How did you even learn how to do stuff like this?

I love those type of scenes. Very well done here! Allow me a question: When creating those large scenes do you create all the far away background city blocks in Cinema 4D too or do you use Photoshop for copying or filling out those large areas. I just ask because those scenes can be very RAM intensive and often not so easy to handle. So do you create many C4D files and composite them in Photoshop or is this one single C4D file with ALL models included? Thanks in advance for any kind of tip :)

Phew, let me think, it's been a while since I did any of these. Actually, as I remember it the polygon count wasn't too high on this one. I did make seperate passes for Diffuse, Ambient Occlusion, Key Light and I think a Top Light pass as well, and composited all those in Photoshop, together with a fog pass to give it some depth. The foreground buldings I think were a seperate render. The sky, clouds and smoke and such were painted in PS. There's some great tutorials on the web, and in Ballistic Publishings two Matte Painting books, expensive but well worth the money if your serious.

Ironically I have a much more powerful 64 bit machine now which could handle a lot more than what's in this scene. Maybe I'll get back on the matte painting wagon again and see what I can come up with.

stone masons greeble pack, is that a greeble plugin that actually creates pipes and machinery and shit like that?

my teacher was going on about something like that last year, he used to have a copy, but lost it

No, unfortunately not...just a set of pre made buildings with lots of greeble like detail on them. I haven't the patience to model all that (But I did do some modelling in this one), but I did do a lot of messing about with the textures.

First of all, I must say that I stared at this piece for about 5 minutes, before being able to clear my mind. I've been willing to create a cityscape for a long time now, and this one acts as a great inspiration to me :) Attention to detail is stunning. How long did it take to model, texture and render it, because most of the time I get demoralized by the amount of effort, that has to go into such an undertaking. Your gallery is awesome and I just wonder why you don't have all the pageviews, that you deserve. Keep up the amazing work, as you have yourself a new watcher :D

please please please!!! you gotta tell me whats the best way to do all the little lights? with a texture? a plugin? whats yur technique for this?

It's done using a texture...essentialy a pattern of white (or coloured) squares on a black background. In Cinema4D the texture is placed in the Colour, Luminance and Alpha channels (all the others are unchecked). I make a selection of which polygons I want lights on and set the texture to this selection, usually in Cubic mode. Because of the alpha channel it just overlays what ever building texture I have beneath.

Hope that made sense and is of any help

Ian
